Hampton Roads NSL October 2023 Meeting

Guest Speaker: Mr. Ed Johnson

During his twenty-seven-year Navy career, Mr. Johnson served on USS ALEXANDER HAMILTON (SSBN 617), and USS SPRINGFIELD (SSN 761), underway operations on USS PHOENIX (SSN 702) and USS CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI (SSN 705).  He participated in multi-national operations on HMS TIRELESS.  Mr. Johnson commanded, Navy Recruiting District, Columbus, Ohio. Shore assignments included, instructor, Naval Submarine School, Requirements Officer on the Staff of the Undersea Warfare Division Deputy Chief of Naval Operations; Deputy Commander for Training, Submarine Squadron SIX; Head, Undersea Warfare Manpower and Training Branch for the Undersea Warfare Division Deputy Chief of Naval Operations; on the faculty of Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, and Navy Advisor, Air University. In June 2006, Mr. Johnson entered federal service as the branch head of the manpower and training branch, Undersea Warfare Division, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Warfare Systems.  He was responsible the planning and programming of over 33,000 active-duty personnel and all undersea systems training, over $3.3 Billion per year.  During this period, he led a Director of the Navy Staff Integrated Process Team to optimize the Chief of Naval Operations staff workforce of over 1200, into a more strategically aligned and effective organization. Mr. Johnson assumed his current role as Chief Operating Officer, VMI Alumni Association in November 2022. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia and was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program in May 1979. Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama where he received a master’s in strategic studies.
